Safe Products for Me & My Family

I told you guys a while back that when I got pregnant I changed so much about my life including the products I use. When I was pregnant, I was especially aware of the products I was putting on my body because I was worried that anything with chemicals would absorb into my skin and potentially affect the baby. Now that little Molly is here, using products that are free of chemicals is more important to me than ever! Everything from the household cleaner I use to my make up – I want my products to be non-toxic and safe for my family! So today in the blog I thought it would be perfect to share some of my favorite natural and non-toxic products with you guys!

One product that I absolutely love, because it has so many uses, is Four Monks cleaning vinegar. It’s an all purpose, non-toxic cleaner without a bunch of mystery ingredients. And when I say it’s all purpose, I really mean ALL purpose! I use the stuff for everything. To wash my rugs (and yes I have all white rugs in my house), to washing wool sweaters, to cleaning Molly’s changing table and toys, to washing my fruits and vegetables (learn all the ways you can use it HERE). In fact, it’s so safe you could actually eat it! I’m not even kidding! Which is really important to me since Molly’s about to get to the stage where babies like to put everything in their mouth. So I can clean her toys and not have to worry when she puts them in her mouth five seconds later. Plus Owen has this thing lately where he loves to mistake her toys for his toys. And as much as I’d love to believe that old tale that Owen’s mouth is cleaner than mine – that’s just not true! Ha! So I’m finding myself having to clean Molly’s toys in her play gym a lot. Oh and I can’t forget to mention it’s pet safe too! Plus it actually works!!! Vinegar is a great natural cleanser and the citrus mint scent leaves my house smelling fresh and not like gross chemicals.

Like I said above, when I was pregnant the products I put on my body had to be safe for my baby. And that’s still true because I’m holding Molly all the time, so she’s always close to my skin and I don’t want her rubbing up against gross chemicals. So I’ve made it a mission of mine to find great products for my face and body that are safe for Molly. One thing I really love so far is this concealer by bareMinerals. It’s so good for contouring and lightening the area under my eyes and it doesn’t have a weird texture like a lot of natural concealers that I’ve tried.

I also love a good highlighter. One of my tricks for not looking so tired as a new mom is putting highlighter on the inner corners of my eyes to make my eyes appear more awake. This is actually a trick I learned when I was the bachelorette and up super late during rose ceremonies and so exhausted from all the dates I went on. As a new mom, this trick has come in very handy. So I guess if I had to say that I took anything I learned on the bachelorette into mommy-hood, it’s using highlighter on my inner eyes. Ha! I use THIS one.

And finally let’s talk about deodorant. I don’t know about you guys but I have tried dozens of all natural deodorants and very few of them work well. I feel bad for Kevin because he’s had to endure me trying all these different natural deodorants and smelling like a truck driver (no offense to truck drivers – hehe – it’s just a figure of speech). Then one night we were watching Shark Tank and a pitch for THIS all natural deodorant came on. Of course I had to try it because I’m obsessed with everything on Shark Tank so I ordered it. Unfortunately the company was back ordered for months and it took me forever to receive the product. But it was honestly worth the wait! Because it actually works! You guys have to try it.

Anyway, I’ve got to run for now. I hope you guys like my recommendations for natural products that can help you and your family live a healthier life. I’ll write more about the other products I use when I have more time and about the products I discover as I find them. And please share your favorite products with me in the comments below! Love you guys!

  1. Thank you Ali! Great suggestions! My daughter is almost the same age as yours, she was born July 1st. I’m curious what diapers you use. We have been having a lot of blow outs lately. We use Honest Company.

  2. We use Norwex products for cleaning. I love using simple baking soda and vinegar too. And I’ve fallen in love with Honest Beauty products!

  3. I use Beauty Counter for skincare and body products. It’s amazing!!!! Check it out! I’m not a consultant, but I should be!

  4. There are 11 essential oils in Piper Wai deodorant, but they won’t tell you what they are. There are some essential oils that are dangerous for a baby if you’re nursing, so without knowing what’s in there, it could be dangerous.
I would check it out if I were you.

You can make your own at home deodorant using 1 part baking soda, one part organic corn starch, one part powdered sugar and then mix it into a little bit of Vitamin E oil, or cream, or whatever you want to use as a base.

The reason for sugar is it’s an antibacterial, in the old days they used it on surgical incisions to prevent infection.
Some natural deodorants, you’ll find also use sugar. If the ratio is right it’s not sticky at all.
Also, the main ingredient in Piper Wai is the activated charcoal, which you can add a little bit to the above ingredients and get the same effect.

This is a review of Piper Wai on Amazon:
"There are many essential oils that you cannot use when you are pregnant or nursing, while pregnant some of them can directly affect the healthy and life of the baby, even in the smallest amounts. Every organic deodorant company I have contact and asked which individual essential oils make up there sent has been happy to tell me exactly what is in their product. Except Piper Wai, they refuse to to be open, upfront and honest about what is in their product, which is enough of an integrity issue for me not to buy it, but I will not use something that could cause harm to my child. Until they can assure me it won’t, I won’t take the risk."

  6. You need to look into Norwex products- their cleaning supplies are chemical free and the towels you use to clean trap bacteria! You actually only need the towel and water to clean. Look up raw chicken Norwex video on you tube and you will be amazed!

  7. To Julie and anyone else looking for more natural diapers: try Bambo. They are made in Denmark but are available on Amazon. If you have an Amazon Mom account (free) you get 20% off.

My daughter just turned 2 and I used Bambo until she potty trained just recently. They never gave me any problems and I never had to switch because of blowouts or rash or anything. Awesome diapers!!!!!

  8. I second the review for Deodo Mom deoderant. I started using it when I was pregnant and have continued since. I tried numerous ‘natural’ deoderants and nothing worked for me. Deodo Mom does, though. Available on Amazon.

  9. Ali –

First, thanks for taking the time to write this awesome blog! I love reading all of your entries! I am 16 weeks pregnant and am excited to try some of these all natural options! Anywho – I am wondering if you could write about baby must haves! I will be registering soon and looking for things that are important to have before baby gets here! I’ve read about a few recommendations you have had about the Owlet and the Mamaroo. Do you others? Thanks again!!

  10. You should definitely check out Beautycounter! There’s over 1500 ingredients on their "Never List" – the company refuses to use harmful ingredients and is dedicated to constant research and testing to achieve that. Plus, all of the product I’ve tried are seriously wonderful. I’d love to chat with anyone who is interested in learning more – or trying out some samples!

  11. Would love to see more posts on this topic because I feel as though it’s very important. It’s hard finding natural things that truly work sometimes.

Would you mind sharing your skin care routine with us sometime?! Your skin is always so flawless!

  12. It is SO hard to find truly healthy beauty products in the US because there are no regulations! My sister and I started an organic, nontoxic, vegan, certified cruelty-free skin care company for this very reason. If you are looking for clean skin care I hope you’ll check us out!
